St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus released the statement below ahead of the House Public Safety Committee hearing four gun control bills that would infringe upon the right of the people of Minnesota to keep and bear arms:
Tomorrow, February 3, the House Public Safety Committee will hear bills on universal background checks, safe storage requirements limiting self-defense in the home, red flag gun confiscation laws, and a reporting requirement for lost and stolen firearms.
The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is firmly opposed to any infringement of Minnesotans’ right to keep and bear arms. It will be supplying testifiers to fight back against the metro anti-gun DFL gun control agenda.
“The DFL’s universal background check bill is concerning for many reasons,” said Bryan Strawser, Chairman, Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus. “This bill would have no impact on violent crime while creating a set of burdensome laws for law-abiding gun owners. For example, the bill requires records of private transfers be kept for 20 years and charges otherwise law-abiding gun owners with a gross misdemeanor if they do not present those records upon any request from a law enforcement officer.”
“Furthermore, this bill gives police the power to deny a purchase permit based on the vague concept of ‘police contacts’ which would disproportionately affect marginalized populations.”
“The DFL’s red flag law is a conglomeration of violations of numerous constitutionally protected rights. A Minnesotan cannot be deprived of their constitutional rights without due process in an adversarial hearing,” said Rob Doar. “This bill does nothing to address the actual risk, the individual. Additionally, Minnesota already has laws for situations where people feel they are in imminent danger. We should focus on the root cause of these issues instead of scapegoating firearms.”
The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus also opposes HF396 and HF601, which are also being heard on Friday.
Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus SVP Rob Doar will be available to speak with the media outside State Capitol Room 120 immediately following the hearing.
