YouTube Video VVVWOUNoOTZvdml2OHBRNlpmUHBKWjR3LkM3UVBERXprZFBV Rep. Pam Altendorf (R-Red Wing) takes the House floor on May 14th, 2026 with one of the most pointed and emotionally clear-eyed moments of the entire HF 5140 debate.

Rep. Altendorf opens with something rare in this debate: real, direct compassion for the families who have endured unimaginable tragedy — the families of the Annunciation Catholic Church and School shooting, and every other family in Minnesota whose loved ones have been touched by gun violence.

But she does not stop there. Because the families deserve better than what the DFL is doing in their name.

"The veil has been lifted on this gun bill."

In a few short, devastating lines, Rep. Altendorf names exactly what HF 5140 actually is — and what it is not:

It is not a serious bipartisan effort to address public safety.

It is not a careful piece of policy crafted with the affected communities.

It is opportunist political theater. It is about the 2026 election. It is about a single floor vote that can be turned into campaign mailers, social media clips, and fundraising appeals.

"This is about a vote. This is about campaign literature."

The families of Annunciation deserve respect. They deserve serious policy. They deserve representatives who care about the cause more than the campaign. And on May 14th, 2026, they did not get that from the DFL — they got political theater dressed up in their loved ones' memories.

HF 5140 is the House clone of SF 4067 — the DFL's omnibus gun ban package that would criminalize commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles, certain shotguns and pistols, home-built firearms, and turn hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Minnesotans into felons overnight.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is leading the fight against this bill. The 2026 session is in its final hours.

Rep. Pam Altendorf: This Isn't About Safety — It's About the 2026 Election
House GOP Floor Leader Rep. Harry Niska (R-Ramsey) returns to the floor on May 14th, 2026 with a follow-up that goes deeper than the "theater" line — and exposes a contradiction the DFL hoped no one would notice.

The contradiction:

When it comes to bipartisan discussions on protecting the security of the Capitol itself — the place where legislators work — Democrats have been willing to negotiate in good faith, without preconditions, without holding the conversation hostage to gun control.

But when it comes to protecting children in Minnesota schools? That's a different story.

According to Rep. Niska, in public — and especially behind closed doors — the DFL position has been clear: there will be no agreement on school safety measures unless those measures come bundled with gun bans.

The DFL will help protect the Capitol without strings attached.

The DFL will not help protect schoolchildren without strings attached.

"Minnesotans see through your theater. And see through holding students hostage to your partisan agenda."

This is the second consecutive floor moment in which Rep. Niska has used the word "theater" to describe the DFL's HF 5140 push — and this time, he names exactly who pays the price for that theater: Minnesota kids.

GOP Floor Leader: "Behind Closed Doors" Democrats Refuse to Protect Students Without Gun Bans
House GOP Floor Leader Rep. Harry Niska (R-Ramsey) takes the floor on May 14th, 2026 with one of the most clear-eyed assessments of what the DFL is actually doing on HF 5140 — and why none of it is a serious legislative effort.

In a sharp, structured floor speech, Rep. Niska makes three points that completely reframe what's been happening in the Minnesota House this week:

**1. The DFL is filibustering their own bill.**
In the entire history of legislative procedure, the party that *doesn't* want a bill to pass is the one that filibusters. This is the first time anyone can remember a party staging a sit-in to demand a vote — and then turning around and filibustering the very bill they claim to want passed. The theater can't hide the contradiction.

**2. The DFL couldn't pass this even when they controlled everything.**
Democrats held a trifecta — the House, the Senate, and the Governor's office — in 2023 and 2024. They had every lever of power. And they still couldn't get the votes to pass an assault weapons ban. The fact that they're suddenly demanding a vote now, in a tied House, isn't about policy. It's about the 2026 elections.

**3. The Senate vote was a fraud.**
The deciding Senate votes openly told their constituents — in writing — that the only reason they voted YES was because they knew it had "no chance of becoming law in the House." That isn't passage. That's permission to virtue-signal without consequence.

"Minnesotans see through your theater. This isn't a serious effort to produce a bipartisan public safety solution."

Rep. Harry Niska: "Minnesotans See Through Your Theater"
Rep. Jim Nash (R-Waconia) returns to the House floor on May 14th, 2026 with a simple question for the DFL's bill author, Rep. Emma Greenman — a question that exposes exactly how little the authors of HF 5140 actually understand about the firearms they're trying to ban.

Rep. Nash asks Rep. Greenman if she knows what a thumbhole stock does on an Olympic biathlon rifle.

Her answer:

"I have never seen a biathlon. I've never met a biathlon. And I've never seen their gun."

This is the legislator who wrote a sweeping gun ban that would, among countless other things, criminalize the very rifles used by Olympic biathletes — bolt-action, single-round, precision target rifles with thumbhole stocks designed for accuracy and stability.

Rep. Nash then proceeds to explain — patiently — what the biathlon actually is, what kind of rifle is used, and why the thumbhole stock matters. It is one of the most quietly devastating exchanges of the entire floor debate.

The DFL's bill author cannot describe what her own bill bans. That is not a minor technical gap. That is a sign that HF 5140 was never written to be a careful, narrowly-tailored public safety measure — it was written to ban as many firearms as the activist groups behind it could fit into 200 pages.

HF 5140 is the House clone of SF 4067 — the DFL's omnibus gun ban package that would criminalize commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles, certain shotguns and pistols, home-built firearms, Olympic-grade target rifles, and turn hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Minnesotans into felons overnight.

The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is leading the fight against this bill. The 2026 session is in its final hours.

"I've Never Seen a Biathlon" — Rep. Greenman Caught Not Knowing What Her Own Bill Bans
Rep. Jim Nash (R-Waconia) returns to the House floor on May 14th, 2026 to dismantle one of the DFL's most-repeated talking points on HF 5140 — the claim that semi-automatic rifles, standard-capacity magazines, and other commonly-owned firearms are somehow "weapons of war" that fall outside Second Amendment protection.

In a sharp, citation-driven floor moment, Rep. Nash points to Caetano v. Massachusetts — a Supreme Court case the DFL would rather you didn't know about — and reads directly from the per curiam opinion.

Why does it matter? Because Caetano was a unanimous decision joined by three of the most prominent progressive justices in modern Supreme Court history: Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Not exactly a conservative panel.

And here is what they wrote — verbatim:

"The Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding."

That single sentence cuts the legs out from under the entire DFL gun ban framework. The "weapons of war" talking point doesn't survive contact with the Supreme Court — and it doesn't even survive contact with the Court's most liberal members.

Even the Liberal Justices Agreed: Rep. Nash Cites Caetano v. Massachusetts
Rep. Jim Nash (R-Waconia) takes the House floor on May 14th, 2026 and exposes exactly how badly written — and how dangerously sweeping — the DFL's HF 5140 actually is.

In a sharp, technical takedown, Rep. Nash walks through what the bill's authors apparently didn't realize they were doing: criminalizing every high school trap team in Minnesota.

Here's the math under HF 5140:

Every trap shooter in the state breaks down and reassembles their trap guns multiple times a week — for cleaning, transport, and storage. That's a basic, universal practice for any competitive shooter. But under the DFL's bill, doing that more than three times makes you a felon.

That's not a hypothetical. Minnesota has the largest high school clay target league in the country — over 30,000 student-athletes. Under HF 5140, the DFL would turn every one of them into a felon.

"If you shoot a high school trap — we'll just start them off young. 18-year-old felons. We'll just send them on their way."

This is what happens when a 200-page gun ban is rammed onto the House floor under suspension of the rules without proper committee scrutiny. The authors didn't know what they were writing. The DFL didn't care. And law-abiding Minnesotans — including teenagers in school-sanctioned sports — would pay the price.
