In this video, Bryan Strawser, Chairman of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, does a detailed review of House File 3433 (and its identical Senate companion, SF 3654) — the DFL’s sweeping ban on so-called “semi-automatic military style assault weapons.” Or, basically, almost every single semi-automatic rifle. Here’s what the bill does at a high level: 🔎 Expands Minnesota’s definition of “semi-automatic military style assault weapon” ➡️ Covers most semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines ➡️ Includes common features like pistol grips, adjustable stocks, flash suppressors ➡️ Applies to many pistols and some shotguns ➡️ Includes parts that could be used to build one 🚫 Ban on transfer, ownership, and possession Illegal to transfer, own, or possess — with limited government exemptions. 💰 Penalty: Felony — up to 5 years in prison and/or $25,000 fine. ⚠️ Limited “grandfathering” — with strict conditions If you owned one before January 1, 2027, you must: • Apply for a state-issued certificate of ownership with a fee of unknown amount • Store it according to BCA regulations (not yet written) • Allow warrantless law enforcement inspections • Renew certification every 3 years • Keep it only on property you control or at a firing range • Report loss/theft within 48 hours • Never transfer it — even to your family Or your only options are: • Surrender it for destruction • Permanently disable it • Remove it from Minnesota You cannot purchase new ones after the effective date.
