Today, your friends at Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus have a renewed resolve to continue to preserve the privacy of Minnesota’s law-abiding gun owners and defeat politicians like Senator Matt Klein’s efforts to expose private data about gun owners for the purpose of “research.”
On Wednesday, a federal judge in California refused to block a new California law permitting the sharing of private data about gun owners from the state’s registry of gun owners and firearm transfers. (As if gun owners didn’t already have enough reason to flee the Republic of California.)
California Assembly Bill 173 allows California to turn over gun owners’ personal information to “researchers affiliated with the California Firearm Violence Research Center at UC Davis for academic and policy research purposes” and “any other nonprofit bona fide research institution accredited by the United States Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation for the study of the prevention of violence.”
California has already instituted “universal background checks,” which means that gun owners’ private information is collected with every firearms TRANSFER in California and entered into the “Automated Firearms System” database. This data includes both the transferor and transferee’s name, address, age, personal characteristics, Social Security number, driver’s license or ID number, occupation, and reason for applying to carry the weapon (in instances of permit applications).
All of that data is handed over to “academics” who have historically taken a very biased and hostile attitude to the right to keep and bear arms. What could go wrong?
