Minnesota Statute 624.7181, Subd 1, (b) (3) allows a MN Permit to Carry holder to carry a long gun in public – openly or concealed – such as a shotgun or rifle. This must be a MN Permit to Carry, other permits are not recognized for long gun carry. Without a MN Permit to Carry, carrying a long gun in a public place is a criminal act.
It’s important to consider that long gun carry is exceptionally rare in Minnesota outside of ranges and hunting season. The carrying of a long gun, particularly in a metro area, is likely to result in a police response involving officers who may or may not be familiar with the statutes governing this matter.
