March 12th, 2024 Gun Control Hearings – House Public Safety

WHAT

  • The House Public Safety Committee is holding a hearing on two gun control bills.

WHEN

  • Tuesday, March 12th, 2024
  • Starting at 10:30AM

WHAT HAPPENED

  • Both bills listed below were laid over for future consideration.
  • No vote was taken today.

HOW TO WATCH

  • Watch the entire hearing via YouTube.
  • See below for specific testimony from the MN Gun Owners Caucus

HF 2828 - Ban on Carry at Government Buildings and Land

Chief Author

  • Rep. Samakab Hussein (DFL HD 65A)

What it Does

  • This bill allows local government (cities, counties, townships, and others) to restrict the carry of firearms in government-owned or leased buildings or land.
  • This would allow local government entities to ban firearms in libraries, parks, recreation centers, government offices, and any other land or buildings that they own or lease.
  • It would create a patchwork of laws across the state that would be impossible to follow.

Read the Bill Text

  • You can read the bill text at the MN Legislature Website.

Where does the MN Gun Owners Caucus stand on this bill?

  • We oppose this bill.

HF 3672 - State Firearms Preemption Repeal

Chief Author

  • Rep. Dave Pinto (MN HD 64B)

What it Does

  • This bill removes all statewide firearms preemption laws in Minnesota.
  • This bill would allow local units of government to make up their own permit laws and requirements, ban firearms & magazines, restrict carry however they choose to, and more.
  • Cities could pass whatever gun control they want, change where you can carry, decide how you store firearms in your homes, and BAN AR-15s and other commonly owned firearms.
  • It would create a patchwork of laws across the state that would be impossible to follow.

Sign our Petition to STOP the DFL Gun Control Push

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE:

  • Whereas, the anti-gun movement, led by state groups like Protect Minnesota and Michael Bloomberg’s out-of-state-funded Everytown, is attempting to take advantage of recent tragedies to drive home their agenda of gun control
  • Whereas, Governor Tim Walz is calling for a ban on firearms holding more than 10 rounds.
  • Whereas, anti-gun Senators like John Marty and Jen McEwen and Representatives like Leigh Finke are calling for a ban on commonly owned firearms in Minnesota
  • Whereas, House & Senate leadership state that gun control is a top legislative priority
  • Whereas, all gun control measures are unconstitutional and a violation of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution

THEREFORE, AS A LAW-ABIDING GUN OWNER AND SUPPORTER OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT, I CALL UPON ALL MEMBERS OF THE MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE TO OPPOSE ANY AND ALL GUN CONTROL BILLS.
